Volunteers
Thanks to you, we are making a difference in Carroll County. (Be sure to report your volunteer hours.)
Come to Tutors Talk, 6:30-8:00, Wednesday, January 13, 2010.
Meet and chat with other tutors.
The Literacy Council program depends on volunteer tutors. We usually have students who are waiting for tutors. We train tutors using the Laubach Literacy system and match them with students needing help with basic English or ESOL, basic math, or beginning computer skills. Both tutor and student may accept or reject the match. Volunteer tutors enrich others’ lives by helping others to improve their skills and meet their life goals.
No experience necessary.
In order to become a tutor, you must
- Be 18 years old and have a high school or equivalent diploma.
- Be sensitive, patient, flexible, and able to respond to a student’s changing needs.
- Complete a 14 hour tutor training Workshop leading to Laubach Literacy Certification.
Tutor training workshops are offered at the Non-Profit Center, 255 Clifton Boulevard, in Westminster. Workshops are scheduled in the spring and the fall and at other times as needed. The Workshop fee is $20.00 which covers workshop materials and includes one year membership in the Literacy Council.
To volunteer as a tutor or to sign up for the next workshop, contact the Literacy Council: 410-857-0766 or lcouncil@carr.org
There are many ways to contribute to the Literacy Council.
