Read Across America--February 27, 2010, 10:00-2:00 Westminster Town Mall, Belk Court

The Literacy Council participatedin the annual "Read Across America" to inspire young readers to enjoy reading. The Council distributed over 200 books for readers of all ages that had been donated to the Literacy Council through the Borders Book Store Drive.

Help your children become readers. We all know reading is important. But sometimes it's not so easy to know where to begin. Here are some tips from John Peters, supervisor of the New York Public Library's Children's Room: :

Children are individuals. There are some that just will never be interested in reading. And there are many other ways to learn to see the world. Don't try to force them to be something they're not, or to do something they don't want to do.

Have books and other reading materials around the house. Make reading part of your life as an adult. Children will see your interest and pick up on it, and will sooner or later begin picking up books on their own.

Parents are not going to interest their children in books and reading if they themselves are not interested. With the best will in the world, parents that don't really like to read or don't really like the stories they are reading will communicate that attitude to their children in subtle ways. The effective reading experience is one which is equally enjoyable to all.

What makes a book resonate with a child? From birth, children are interested in themselves. So if you can find a way of presenting a story or telling a story in a way that a child sees him or herself in it, that will create a strong response. Children start out being interested in their immediate world, and then their boundaries expand. Next, they look for their place in that world. The books that address that interest endure and provide an important experience for children.

Carroll Arts Council Festival of Wreaths

Jeanne Carbaugh put her package wrapping skills to work as she created a festive wreath for the Carroll Arts Council Festival of Wreaths in December 2009. Thanks, Jeanne!

Borders Book Drive

Charlotte Laslo moves three of the fifteen boxes of books donated to the Literacy Council from the Borders Book Store 2009 Book Drive.

In August, Borders' customers were asked if they wanted to donate a book to the Literacy Council. All kinds of books for all levels were donated-- from fiction and fantasy to nature and science, from board books for infants to first readers to novels, romances, and non-fiction—not to mention joke books, crosswords, pop-ups, and more. Thanks to the people of Carroll County for their generosity and their concern for literacy. The Literacy Council will add some books to its lending library, give some to students and tutors, and donate some to other non-profits in Carroll Conty. If you represent a non-profit that would like to receive books from the Literacy Council, contact the office.
