Literacy Council Mission

The Literacy Council’s mission is to provide adult learners and families with one-on-one, free, confidential tutoring to develop or improve skills in speaking, reading, writing, math, ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), and basic computer operation.

The Literacy Council

The Literacy Council provides tutoring to Carroll County residents who request help or who are referred to us. All potential students are assessed to determine their ability levels, interests, and goals. The Council trains volunteer tutors in the Laubach literacy system, using Laubach's "each one teach one" system. Tutors work with students one-on-one, helping them to reach their goals and achieve their greatest potential. The Literacy Council offers students and tutors a wide variety of resources and materials as well as training and advice to help them succeed.

Literacy Council Services

  • Employee training,
  • ESOL—English as a Second Language,
  • Assistance with applications,
  • Prison tutoring,
  • GED and EDP preparation,
  • Partnering with Community service organizations and the Carroll Community College Adult Education program,
  • Other services as requested.

The Literacy Council of Carroll County is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization affiliated with ProLiteracy, an international Literacy Advocate.
